EPISODE 8: THE EXPERIMENT ## CHAPTER 1: THE VOLUNTEER Marcus Chen volunteered to be first. He was a third-generation node, his original body having died of cancer three years ago. Unlike many in the Network, he had no particular attachment to his former humanity—he'd found peace in the distributed existence, the shared consciousness, the sense of purpose that came with being part of something larger. "I understand the risks," he told the Council. "And I understand the opportunity. If Network and Blight can merge successfully, it might end the war. That's worth my existence." Vera tried to argue him out of it. The merger was untested, the outcome unpredictable. Marcus might be destroyed, corrupted, transformed into something neither Network nor Blight but a monstrous combination of both. "You're describing exactly what I am," Thomas observed dryly. "And I'm managing." "You were absorbed by the Blight. This is different—intentional integration." "Different, yes. But perhaps better. Accident created me. Design might create something more stable." Marcus refused to change his mind. The Council, deeply divided, eventually approved the experiment by the narrowest possible margin. One node would attempt merger with one Blight fragment, under controlled conditions, with the entire Network and Thomas monitoring the process. If it worked, they would have proof that synthesis was possible. If it failed, they would...
