Signal From Tau Ceti / Season 1, Episode 3
The Mind Bender
EPISODE 3: THE MIND BENDER
CHAPTER 1: THE SETUP
Viktor Petrov operated out of a converted warehouse in the eastern industrial district.
From the outside, it looked abandoned—rusted walls, broken windows, the usual decay of a building forgotten since the Integration. But Marcus's Enhanced Vision showed the truth: motion sensors, magical wards, and at least fifteen Awakened moving inside.
[SCANNING...] [AWAKENED DETECTED: 17] [LEVEL RANGE: 6-14] [HIGHEST THREAT: VIKTOR PETROV, LEVEL 14]
"His guards are mostly Commons and Uncommons," Kira's voice came through the earpiece. "He prefers quantity over quality. Easier to control with his mental abilities."
"And Viktor himself?"
"Stays in his office on the top floor. He rarely comes down unless there's a problem. Your job is to become a problem worth investigating."
Marcus adjusted his disguise—ragged clothes, haunted expression, the look of a desperate Awakened who'd hit rock bottom. Not much of a stretch, considering recent events.
"When I drain him, his guards will react."
"That's what I'm here for. The moment you touch him, I'll create a distraction. You have thirty seconds to drain and extract. After that, you're on your own."
"Comforting."
"I didn't say this would be easy. I said it would be worth it."
CHAPTER 2: THE APPROACH
Marcus approached the warehouse's front entrance with his hands visible.
A guard stopped him immediately—a burly man with the glow of enhanced muscles and the dead eyes of someone under mental compulsion.
[GUARD - LEVEL 8, CLASS: BRUTE] [SKILLS: Enhanced Strength, Thick Skin] [STATUS: MENTALLY CONTROLLED]
"I want to join," Marcus said. "I heard Viktor takes care of people who work for him."
The guard studied him with eyes that weren't fully his own. Somewhere in the warehouse, Viktor was watching through this man's perspective.
"Skills?"
"Scout class. Enhanced Vision. I can spot threats before they get close."
"Useful." The guard stepped aside. "Inside. Don't touch anything. Don't talk to anyone. Wait."
Marcus entered.
CHAPTER 3: THE WAIT
The warehouse interior was a maze of crates and equipment, converted into a crude headquarters. Awakened lounged around, their eyes carrying the same glazed quality as the guard—present but not quite there.
Viktor's Mental Control, Marcus realized. He didn't just run a protection racket. He collected people. Controlled them. Made them extensions of his will.
"Creepy, isn't it?" A young woman sat near the entrance, her expression more aware than the others. Level 7, Class: Healer. Not fully controlled—just scared enough to cooperate. "He doesn't control everyone. Just enough to make sure no one tries anything."
"How long have you been here?"
"Two months. I tried to leave once." She touched her temple, where a faint scar ran along her hairline. "He made me watch myself try to cut out my own eye. Then he stopped me and asked if I wanted to try again."
Marcus's jaw tightened. "And the authorities?"
"The guilds don't care. The government's too busy with the Dungeons. Viktor's useful to some of the powers that be—keeps this district orderly." Her laugh was bitter. "Orderly. That's what they call it."
CHAPTER 4: THE SUMMONS
An hour passed before Viktor summoned him.
The office was on the top floor, accessible only by a single staircase. Two more guards flanked the door—both Level 10, both carrying weapons that glowed with enchantment.
Inside, Viktor Petrov waited.
He was smaller than Marcus expected—average height, slight build, the kind of man who would have been invisible before the Integration. But his eyes... his eyes were predatory. Hungry in a way that had nothing to do with food.
[VIKTOR PETROV] [LEVEL: 14] [CLASS: MIND BENDER] [SKILLS: Suggestion, Mental Shield, Memory Manipulation, Paralysis Gaze]
"Marcus Cole," Viktor said, his voice soft and cultured. "That's the name you gave my guard. Is it your real one?"
"Does it matter?"
"Everything matters. Names have power." Viktor circled his desk, his movements languid, confident. "You have Enhanced Vision. I can feel you scanning me. Seeing my skills, perhaps?"
Marcus said nothing.
"Interesting." Viktor stopped directly in front of him, close enough to touch. "I also know what you're not telling me. Your real class. Your real abilities."
His eyes flared with golden light.
[WARNING: PARALYSIS GAZE ACTIVATED] [RESISTANCE CHECK: FAILED]
Marcus's body locked in place. He couldn't move, couldn't speak, couldn't even blink.
"You're the Skill Thief," Viktor purred. "The one with the bounty. Did you think I wouldn't recognize you? Did you think my network of eyes wouldn't report your approach?"
CHAPTER 5: THE TRAP
"I knew you were coming three days ago," Viktor continued, circling Marcus's frozen form. "A Skill Thief. Such a delicious irony. You come to steal my skills, and instead, I get to add yours to my collection."
He leaned close, his breath hot against Marcus's ear.
"I can't steal skills like you can. But I can control someone who can. Imagine—a Skill Thief under my command. I could drain anyone I wanted. Build an army of the most powerful Awakened in the city."
Inside his paralyzed mind, Marcus fought against the control. His willpower strained against Viktor's ability, looking for any crack, any weakness.
[MENTAL RESISTANCE: ACTIVE] [PARALYSIS EFFECT: WEAKENING]
"The bounty mentioned you were strong-willed," Viktor mused. "I can feel you fighting. It's... impressive. But ultimately futile. My Mental Shield makes me immune to your Skill Drain. Even if you could move, you couldn't take anything from me."
That wasn't entirely true.
Marcus had studied Viktor's skills through his Skill Sight. Mental Shield provided immunity to direct mental attacks. But Skill Drain wasn't a mental attack—it was something else. Something the System itself classified as unique.
The question was whether he could move long enough to find out.
CHAPTER 6: THE BREAK
Kira's distraction came at exactly the right moment.
An explosion rocked the warehouse—not large enough to cause casualties, but big enough to shake the building and shatter Viktor's concentration.
[PARALYSIS GAZE: INTERRUPTED] [MOVEMENT RESTORED]
Marcus moved on instinct.
His hand shot out, grabbing Viktor's wrist. The Mind Bender's eyes widened—not with fear, but with confusion.
"Mental Shield—" Viktor started.
[SKILL DRAIN ACTIVATED] [TARGET: VIKTOR PETROV] [SKILLS AVAILABLE: Suggestion, Mental Shield, Memory Manipulation, Paralysis Gaze] [SELECT SKILL TO DRAIN...]
"Doesn't protect against this," Marcus finished.
[SKILL DRAIN: PARALYSIS GAZE] [SUCCESS!] [SKILL ACQUIRED: Paralysis Gaze (Level 3)] [TARGET HAS LOST: Paralysis Gaze]
Viktor screamed.
Not the scream of pain Marcus had heard from other victims—this was different. This was the sound of a man who had never known weakness suddenly understanding what it meant to lose.
"My eyes! My—what did you—how—"
Marcus didn't wait for him to recover. He activated his new skill.
[PARALYSIS GAZE ACTIVATED]
Golden light flared from his eyes. Viktor froze mid-sentence, locked in place by his own former ability.
"Now," Marcus said, "let's talk about freeing your prisoners."
CHAPTER 7: THE LIBERATION
The guards came when Viktor's mental control wavered.
Without Paralysis Gaze to back up his power, Viktor's grip on his followers weakened. Not enough to break completely—Suggestion and Memory Manipulation still held most of them—but enough that some began to question, began to resist.
Marcus dealt with the guards who remained loyal, his new Paralysis Gaze proving devastatingly effective. Level 10 Awakened who should have overpowered him froze the moment they met his eyes.
[GUARD DEFEATED] [EXPERIENCE: +50]
[GUARD DEFEATED] [EXPERIENCE: +55]
By the time Kira arrived through the window, Marcus had cleared the office.
"Viktor's controlled," she reported, checking the paralyzed Mind Bender. "The guards are scattered. But we need to move—the other districts will have heard the explosion."
"What about his prisoners?"
"The mental compulsion will fade over the next few days, now that Viktor can't reinforce it. The ones who want to leave will leave. The ones who've been here too long..." She shook her head. "Some damage can't be undone."
Marcus looked at Viktor—frozen, helpless, finally knowing what it felt like to be prey.
"What do we do with him?"
"Leave him for the authorities. With his most dangerous skill gone, he's just another criminal. Let the government deal with him."
CHAPTER 8: THE AFTERMATH
The heist made the news.
[BREAKING: KNOWN CRIMINAL VIKTOR PETROV APPREHENDED] [REPORTS INDICATE SKILL LOSS - AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING]
[SKILL THIEF STRIKES AGAIN] [CITIZENS WARNED TO AVOID DIRECT CONTACT WITH UNKNOWN AWAKENED]
Marcus watched the coverage from one of Kira's safe houses, his new Paralysis Gaze still settling into his Status.
[STATUS: MARCUS COLE] [LEVEL: 9] [CLASS: SKILL THIEF (MYTHIC)]
[SKILLS] Skill Drain (Core) - Level 2 Skill Sight (Passive) - Level 2 Enhanced Vision - Level 2 (Stolen) Enhanced Strength - Level 1 (Stolen) Minor Regeneration - Level 1 Mana Sense - Level 2 (Stolen) Paralysis Gaze - Level 3 (Stolen)
Seven skills now. Four stolen. And each one a story—a moment when he'd taken something that wasn't his.
"How do you deal with it?" he asked Kira. "The stealing. The taking."
"By remembering who I take from." Kira sat across from him, cleaning her daggers. "Viktor hurt people. He enslaved them. Whatever I took from him is less than what he deserved."
"But it still feels wrong."
"Good. The day it feels right is the day you become what they think we are." She sheathed her daggers. "We're thieves, Marcus. We steal to survive, and we try to make sure the people we steal from are worse than us. That's the line we walk."
"That's a thin line."
"It's the only line we have."
CHAPTER 9: THE NEXT STEP
The liberation of Viktor's operation had consequences.
Some were good—the freed Awakened scattered, some joining guilds, others going independent. A few even sought out Kira's network, grateful for what had been done.
Others were bad.
[BOUNTY INCREASED] [TARGET: SKILL THIEF] [NEW REWARD: 50,000 Credits, Epic Equipment Package] [ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Confirmed ability to drain skills even from Shielded targets. Exercise extreme caution.]
"They're escalating," Kira observed. "Viktor was connected to some powerful people. They're not happy."
"So what do we do?"
"We do what we always do. We keep moving. Keep growing. Keep finding targets who deserve what's coming to them." She pulled up a new file on her screen. "Speaking of which—our next target."
The image showed a woman in military uniform, her expression cold and calculating.
[ELENA VOSS] [LEVEL: 20] [CLASS: BATTLE COMMANDER] [AFFILIATION: AWAKENED REGISTRATION AUTHORITY]
"She's government?"
"She's the one who placed the bounty on you. And on me." Kira's eyes hardened. "She's been hunting Skill Thieves since the Integration began. Six months ago, she caught one in Europe. They never saw trial."
"What happened to them?"
"Officially? 'Resistance during arrest.' Unofficially? Voss wanted to see what would happen if you killed a Skill Thief. Wanted to know if the stolen skills returned to their owners."
Marcus felt cold. "Did they?"
"No. The skills died with the thief. Voss considers that valuable information." Kira stood. "She's coming to Chicago in two weeks. A 'tactical conference' with local guild leaders. But really, she's coming for us."
"So we ambush her first?"
"So we prepare. Elena Voss isn't Viktor Petrov. She's trained, protected, and very, very smart." Kira's smile was grim. "If we're going to take her down, we're going to need help. More allies. More power. More skills."
Marcus looked at his Status screen. Level 9. Seven skills. Still so far from where he needed to be.
"Then let's get started."
