EPISODE 2: THE HUNTED

CHAPTER 1: THE WORD SPREADS

The bounty appeared on the third day.

[BOUNTY ALERT] [TARGET: UNKNOWN MALE, LEVEL 7-10] [DESCRIPTION: Suspected Mythic-class Awakened. Ability to steal skills through contact. Last seen: Collapsed Subway District] [REWARD: 10,000 Credits, Rare Equipment Package] [POSTED BY: Awakened Registration Authority]

Marcus saw it everywhere—on public System boards, in guild announcements, whispered in the gatherings of Awakened across the city.

He'd become the most wanted person in Chicago.

CHAPTER 2: SURVIVAL MODE

Marcus changed everything.

He dyed his hair, changed his clothes, avoided the districts where he'd been seen. He stopped using his obvious skills in public—Enhanced Strength, Enhanced Vision—anything that might identify him.

But Skill Sight was always active. He couldn't help it.

Everywhere he went, he saw skills. People on the street, guards at checkpoints, shopkeepers and vendors. Each one a potential target. Each one a reminder of what he could do.

And increasingly, each one looking at him with suspicion.

The party from the Dungeon had given a description. Male, early twenties, dark hair, unusual reflexes. It was vague enough that he wasn't immediately identified, but specific enough that people paid attention.

He needed to level up, but Dungeons were being watched. He needed resources, but vendors wanted identification. He needed allies, but everyone was a potential enemy.

He was trapped in a city of millions, completely alone.

CHAPTER 3: THE UNDERGROUND

On the fifth day, he found the black market.

It operated in the basement of an old warehouse, accessible only through a series of coded knocks and password phrases. The entrance was guarded by a hulking man whose skills Marcus immediately catalogued:

[LEVEL: 15, CLASS: IRON SKIN] [SKILLS: Damage Reduction, Enhanced Constitution, Intimidation Aura]

"Looking to buy or sell?" the guard asked.

"Buy. Information."

"Credits up front."

Marcus handed over a small pouch—most of his Dungeon earnings, converted through anonymous channels. The guard counted, nodded, and stepped aside.

Inside, chaos.

Dozens of stalls selling unregistered equipment, stolen skill stones, forged identification. Awakened who didn't want government oversight, criminals who saw opportunity in the new world, desperate people looking for any advantage.

Marcus found the information broker in the back corner—a woman with silver hair and eyes that seemed to look through him.

[LEVEL: 22, CLASS: WHISPER] [SKILLS: Truth Sense, Memory Read, Silence Zone, Information Network]

"You're the Skill Thief," she said immediately. "Don't bother lying. I can taste your secrets."

Marcus's hand moved toward his weapon.

"Relax. I'm not interested in the bounty. Government money comes with government attention." She gestured to a seat across from her. "But I am interested in you."

CHAPTER 4: THE OFFER

Her name was Echo. She ran the largest information network in Chicago's underground—a web of spies, informants, and hackers who traded in the most valuable commodity of the new world: knowledge.

"You're unique," she said. "In three months of Integration, you're the first confirmed Skill Thief to emerge anywhere on the planet. The government is very nervous."

"Why?"

"Because you represent the nightmare scenario. An Awakened who can steal power from other Awakened. If there were a hundred of you, the entire class system would collapse. No one would be safe."

"There might be others."

"If there are, they're smarter than you. They haven't been seen." Echo smiled thinly. "But you... you got caught. And now you're running."

"I'm surviving."

"For now. But the net is closing. The government has contracted three guild parties to hunt you. The Churches have declared you an abomination. And there are... other interests... who want to study you."

Marcus's blood went cold. "Study?"

"Capture. Dissect. Figure out how your ability works. Replicate it, maybe. Or neutralize it." Echo leaned forward. "You need help. And I can provide it. For a price."

CHAPTER 5: THE PRICE

"I don't have much to offer," Marcus said.

"You have skills. Or rather, you can acquire skills." Echo's silver eyes gleamed. "There are certain abilities I need accessed. Certain people who have them. If you work for me—selective targets, clean operations—I'll provide sanctuary. False identity. Access to Dungeons that aren't being monitored."

"You want me to steal skills for you."

"I want you to leverage your unique ability for mutual benefit. The targets would be... deserving. Criminals. Predators. People who use their skills to harm others."

It was tempting. A direction, a purpose, resources he desperately needed.

But it also meant becoming exactly what people feared—a weapon pointed at other Awakened.

"I'll think about it," Marcus said.

"Don't think too long. The hunters are getting closer." Echo handed him a small device—a burner communicator. "When you're ready, call. But know that this offer has an expiration date."

CHAPTER 6: THE ENCOUNTER

Marcus left the underground through a different exit, his mind spinning with possibilities.

He was so distracted that he almost missed the ambush.

Three figures stepped out of the shadows ahead. Three more behind. All wearing the distinctive insignia of the Hunter's Guild—one of the organizations contracted to find him.

[PARTY DETECTED] [LEVELS: 10, 12, 12, 11, 15, 14] [WARNING: HOSTILE INTENT]

"Marcus Cole," the leader said. A woman with a bow and arrows that glowed with enchantment. Level 15, Class: Storm Archer. "You're coming with us."

Marcus assessed his options. Six against one. Higher levels across the board. In an alley with limited mobility.

His Skill Drain was ready. His other abilities might give him an edge.

But six-on-one was suicide, even with stolen skills.

"I don't suppose we could talk about this?"

"No." The Storm Archer nocked an arrow. "The government wants you alive. But they didn't say in what condition."

CHAPTER 7: THE INTERVENTION

The attack came from above.

A figure dropped from the rooftops—black cloak, twin daggers, moving faster than Marcus's Enhanced Vision could track. In three seconds, two of the hunters were down, their legs cut out from under them.

[UNKNOWN AWAKENED] [LEVEL: 18, CLASS: ???] [SKILLS: ???, ???, ???]

"Run!" the figure shouted, their voice distorted by some kind of skill.

Marcus didn't need to be told twice.

He sprinted past the confused hunters, ducking under a lightning-infused arrow that nearly took his head off. The mysterious Awakened followed, holding off the remaining hunters with a display of combat skill that left Marcus in awe.

They ran through alleys, over rooftops, through a Dungeon entrance and out a hidden exit on the other side. By the time they stopped, they were on the far side of the city, in a district Marcus had never explored.

"Who are you?" Marcus demanded, his hand on his weapon.

The figure lowered their hood.

A young woman, maybe his age, with short-cropped black hair and a scar running down her left cheek. Her eyes were dark, calculating, familiar.

"My name is Kira," she said. "And I've been looking for you for three days."

CHAPTER 8: THE EXPLANATION

Kira was a Skill Thief.

"There are three of us," she explained, after they'd found shelter in an abandoned factory. "That we know of. Me, you, and someone in Europe who's been very careful about staying hidden."

Marcus stared at her Status, now visible through his Skill Sight:

[KIRA VANCE] [LEVEL: 18] [CLASS: SKILL THIEF (MYTHIC)] [SKILLS: Skill Drain (Core), Skill Sight (Passive), Shadow Step (Stolen), Blade Mastery (Stolen), Enhanced Reflexes (Stolen), Silent Movement (Stolen), Detect Lies (Stolen)]

Seven skills, five of them stolen. She was everything he might become, given time and opportunity.

"Why help me?"

"Because we're the same. Because the world is going to hunt us no matter what we do. And because together, we're stronger than alone." Kira leaned against a rusted machine, her daggers still in hand. "I've been watching you since the bounty appeared. Saw how you fought. How you think. You're not just powerful—you're smart. That's rare."

"I got caught."

"Everyone gets caught eventually. What matters is what you do after." She sheathed her daggers. "I have a proposition."

CHAPTER 9: THE PROPOSITION

Kira's network was small but effective.

She'd been Awakened since the first week of Integration, had spent three months building contacts, identifying targets, learning the landscape. She had safe houses across the city, access to unmonitored Dungeons, and a list of "deserving targets"—criminals and predators whose skills could be stolen without guilt.

"The key is precision," she explained, pulling up holographic maps of the city. "We don't take from the innocent. We don't attract attention. We grow our power slowly, steadily, until we're strong enough that hunting us becomes too expensive."

"And then what?"

"Then we negotiate. From a position of strength. Show the world that Skill Thieves can be useful, not just dangerous. Get legal recognition. Maybe even protection."

It was ambitious. Maybe impossible.

But it was better than running alone until he was caught.

"I'm in," Marcus said. "But I have conditions."

"Name them."

"I choose my own targets. I don't steal from anyone who doesn't deserve it. And if I want out, I get to walk away."

Kira studied him for a long moment. "Fair. But know that once you're in, there's no halfway. The hunters don't care about nuance. They'll kill you or me just the same."

"I understand."

Kira offered her hand. "Welcome to the resistance, Marcus Cole."

He shook it.

And felt, for the first time since the Integration, like he wasn't completely alone.

CHAPTER 10: THE FIRST MISSION

Their first target was a man named Viktor Petrov.

[VIKTOR PETROV] [LEVEL: 14] [CLASS: MIND BENDER] [SKILLS: Suggestion, Mental Shield, Memory Manipulation, Paralysis Gaze]

A psychic who used his abilities to control and exploit others. He ran a protection racket in the eastern districts, forcing business owners to pay tribute or face mental "adjustment."

"He's been untouchable because the guilds don't want the PR nightmare of fighting a Mind Bender," Kira explained. "Too many potential hostages, too many brainwashed innocents. But we don't need to fight him publicly. We just need to get close enough to drain."

The plan was elegant.

Marcus would pose as a potential recruit—someone desperate enough to join Viktor's organization. Once close enough, he'd activate Skill Drain, take the most dangerous skill, and escape in the confusion.

Simple in theory. Potentially fatal in practice.

"Ready?" Kira asked, her form already fading into shadows.

Marcus checked his Status one more time.

[VITALITY: 175/175] [STAMINA: 160/160] [MANA: 165/165] [SKILL DRAIN: READY]

"Ready."
