EPISODE 3: BLOOD PACKAGE

Midnight Protocol — Season 1, Episode 3

The gold trail led through a yellow zone that wanted to be red when it grew up.

Rae's map labeled it HARBOR TENEMENTS — D-RANK CONTESTED. Guild tags floated over burnt-out cars: IRON MARROW in crimson, MERCY CROSS SURVIVORS in green, and a corporate white label that simply said AEGIS LOGISTICS — SPONSORED CLEARANCE.

``` [STATUS — RAE VOSS] Level: 5 Class: Protocol Runner (Restricted+) HP: 100/100 STA: 100/100 XP: 40/400 AGI: 22 | END: 16 | STR: 10 | INT: 12 | WIL: 14 | LCK: 7 Skills: Sprint, Route Sense, Stabilize, Satchel Link (2), Parcel Bomb, Priority Lane (1/day) ```
Kade Orr found her on a rooftop edge, because of course he did. Same courier network, better bike, worse morals. His nameplate was smug.
``` [ENTITY: KADE ORR] [CLASS: RUNNER] [LEVEL: 6] [AFFILIATION: AEGIS LOGISTICS (CONTRACT)] ```

"They're paying real currency and System coin for a blood package across Iron Marrow turf," Kade said. "I told them I knew a girl who can't refuse a delivery."

``` [CONTRACT QUEST OFFER: BLOOD PACKAGE] Client: Aegis Logistics Objective: Deliver sealed vial case to Rooftop Node C before 18:00 Hazard: Iron Marrow ambush likely Reward: 600 XP + 200 System Coin + Aegis Favor (1) Penalty for failure: Hostility with Aegis + case detonation risk Accept? [Y/N] ```
Rae's compulsion pulled. She also saw Maya's gold thread cutting through the same neighborhood.
"I'll take it," she said. "But if this package hurts civilians, I will mail you to the Conductor."
Kade laughed. "Welcome to the economy."
CHAPTER 1: RULES OF THE ROAD
Iron Marrow controlled street level with chains and baseball bats that had become Weapon: Spiked Club +3. Rae stayed on rooftops. Priority Lane burned once to cross a restricted skybridge marked GUILD ONLY.
``` [PRIORITY LANE ACTIVATED] [ZONE RESTRICTION IGNORED] [COOLDOWN: 24:00:00] ```

A sniper round sparked concrete. Her HP dropped.

``` [DAMAGE TAKEN: 18] [HP: 82/100] [BLEEDING: MINOR] ```
She Stabilize'd herself—ugly, inefficient, alive—and Parcel Bombed the sniper's nest with a brick. The System approved with XP.
``` [+55 XP] [ENEMY DOWN] ```

CHAPTER 2: THE PACKAGE ARGUES

At a skybridge midpoint, the case pulsed.

``` [QUEST ITEM WARNING] Contents: Unstable Blood Catalyst If opened: AoE corruption 20m If shaken excessively: timer accelerates ```
"Don't you dare," Rae told it.
An Iron Marrow enforcer blocked the far side—Level 7, title Bone Toll.
``` [ENTITY: BONE TOLL] [DEMAND: HALF YOUR COIN OR A SKILL] ```

Rae had 14 coins and two Satchel slots. She hated the math either way.

"Skill," she said. "Temporary. Satchel terms."

Bone Toll blinked, then grinned, and shoved a brutal skill into her.

``` [SATCHEL LINK: BONE CRACK (ACTIVE 3:00)] Heavy melee strike, high STA cost ```
She used it once to break his knee, returned nothing with a smile that was all teeth, and ran while he howled about theft.
``` [NOTE: Skills gifted under duress still count as willing if donor initiates] [INSTALLER EMOTE: :) ] ```

"Don't smile at me," Rae muttered.

CHAPTER 3: NODE C

Rooftop Node C was a forest of antennas and a woman in a white Aegis coat with a clipboard made of light.

``` [ENTITY: HANDLER RUIZ] [CLASS: ADMINISTRATOR] [LEVEL: 8] ```
Rae set the case down like a baby made of dynamite.
``` [DELIVERY COMPLETE] [+600 XP] [+200 System Coin] [AEGIS FAVOR +1] [LEVEL UP!] [LEVEL 5 → 6] [+2 AGI] [+1 END] [+1 WIL] ```

"Efficient," Ruiz said. "Aegis can use Protocol Runners. Benefits. Armor. Dental."

"Where's my sister trail?" Rae asked.

Ruiz's eyes flicked to Rae's map. "Bond trails aren't corporate assets. Yet."

The gold line still ran east—stronger now, as if Level 6 bought clarity.

``` [SISTER PROTOCOL UPDATE] Maya Voss: Alive (signal confidence 71%) Location cluster: East Water Plant — Dungeon seed forming ```
Rae turned her bike toward the water plant as sirens that were not sirens rose from the streets—System horns announcing a CITY EVENT.
``` [CITY EVENT: FIRST GUILD WAR — PREVIEW] Begin in 48:00:00 Prepare deliveries. Prepare graves. ```

She checked her status one more time, because numbers were how she prayed now.

``` [STATUS — RAE VOSS] Level: 6 Class: Protocol Runner HP: 100/100 Coin: 214 Active Quests: Sister Protocol, Learn the Rules (2/3) ```
"I'm coming, Maya," she said into the wind.
The System, for once, did not answer with a panel.
It just let her run.
END OF EPISODE 3
Next: Episode 4 — "Guild Offer" Aegis and Mercy Cross both want Rae's routes. Maya's signal enters a forming dungeon.
CODEX NOTE: HOW THE SYSTEM FEELS
Rae learned quickly that the System did not care about dignity. It cared about inputs and outputs. Move fast, gain XP. Stand still, watch timers die. Help someone, sometimes get a quest. Help the wrong someone, inherit their enemies.
She tested rules the way couriers tested shortcuts:
She wrote none of this down. Paper felt temporary. Memory felt like the only inventory that couldn't be looted—until the System started offering memory slots, and she refused them on principle.
INTERLUDE: MAYA
Maya Voss was sixteen and better at math than Rae had ever been. She kept a chart on her bedroom wall of inhaler doses and peak-flow numbers because the world had always been a system—just a crueler, quieter one called poverty and bad lungs.
Rae had promised to be home by sunrise.
Sunrise was a System phase now.
As Rae pedaled toward the east apartments, she checked every panel for a sibling tag. None appeared. The map fragment marked the block yellow, not red. Yellow meant danger without certainty. Certainty was a luxury.
A child on a balcony waved at her. The child's nameplate read:
``` [ENTITY: CHILD] [CLASS: NONE — PENDING] [PROTECTION DEBUFF: FRAGILE] ```

Rae waved back and did not stop. Stopping was how Couriers failed quests. Failing quests was how people died with her name on the failure log.

She told herself Maya was smart. Smart people survived mornings.

She did not tell herself smart people never needed rescuing.

When she reached their building, the front door had a new lock made of light.

``` [ACCESS REQUIREMENT: PARTY MEMBER OR KEY ITEM] [YOUR KEY: NOT FOUND] ```
Rae kicked the physical door anyway. It opened. The light-lock shattered into sparks and a scolding message.
``` [WARNING: FORCED ENTRY] [BUILDING ALERT RAISED — MINOR] ```

Their apartment was empty. Maya's chart was on the wall. A note on the table in Maya's handwriting:

If the sky goes weird, I'm going to Mrs. Duran in 4B. Don't freak out. Love you. —M

4B was empty too. A quest shimmered where a person should have been.

``` [QUEST SEED: SISTER PROTOCOL] Status: Incomplete information Hint: Follow residual bond trail (available at Level 5) ```
Rae stood in the quiet kitchen and let herself feel the fear for ten full seconds. Then she closed it like a cooler lid and went back into the street, because the System rewarded motion and punished grief that stood still.
