EPISODE 2: LINE 7

Midnight Protocol — Season 1, Episode 2

By noon the subway had a boss timer.

Rae stood under the cracked tile of the Harbor Street entrance and watched the System paint a gate across the stairwell: an arch of cold blue light with rotating text.

``` [DUNGEON: LINE 7] [RANK: E] [RECOMMENDED LEVEL: 3–6] [PARTY SIZE: 1–4] [CLEAR CONDITION: REACH PLATFORM END + DEFEAT CONDUCTOR] [FAILURE: DEATH / EJECTION AT 10% HP] [ENTER?] ```
Lin Cho had sent her with two others: Ortiz (still bandaged, Class: Guard) and a paramedic named Sasha who had rolled Scout and looked offended about it.
``` [PARTY] - Rae Voss — Courier Lv3 - Ortiz — Guard Lv3 - Sasha Okonkwo — Scout Lv2 ```

"I am not a dungeon person," Sasha said.

"Nobody is," Rae said. "The dungeon disagrees."

She entered.

CHAPTER 1: FARE

The stairs down became longer than architecture allowed. Ads on the walls rewrote into tutorial tips.

``` [TIP: Dungeons scale to party average level] [TIP: Light sources attract certain entities] [TIP: Couriers may accept intra-dungeon delivery side quests] ```
At the turnstile, a translucent attendant held out a hand.
``` [ENTITY: FARE WRAITH] [DEMAND: 1 MEMORY OR 50 XP OR 1 SKILL USE] ```

Ortiz raised his baton. Rae shook her head. "Don't. It's a toll, not a fight."

She offered XP. The wraith smiled with too many teeth and dissolved.

``` [-50 XP] [XP: 125/250] [ACCESS GRANTED] ```
Beyond the gates, the tunnel was a throat full of rails and red eyes.
``` [ZONE: LINE 7 INTERIOR] [DANGER: ELEVATED] [ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD: THIRD RAIL (LETHAL)] ```

Route Sense tried to draw a path and then glitched, embarrassed.

``` [ROUTE SENSE: LIMITED IN DUNGEONS] [SCOUT AURA DETECTED — DEFER TO PARTY SCOUT] ```
Sasha's eyes glowed faint gold. "Left tunnel. Right one has a nest. Don't ask how I know."
``` [SCOUT SKILL: THREAT PING] [HOSTILES MARKED: 6] ```

They moved.

CHAPTER 2: SIDE QUEST ON THE TRACKS

Halfway to the platform, a side panel sprang open like a pop-up ad from hell.

``` [SIDE QUEST: LOST TRANSFER] Objective: Retrieve Transfer Token from Rat King cache Reward: 120 XP + Token (Key Item) Accept? [Y/N] ```
Rae's class compulsion tugged. Couriers did not ignore packages.
"I have to," she said.
Ortiz cursed. Sasha grinned despite herself. "Of course you do."
The Rat King was less king and more mass of tails and stolen watches. Level 4. It dropped the token when Rae used Sprint to flank and Ortiz held Guard Stance as a wall.
``` [ENEMY DEFEATED: RAT KING] [+90 XP shared] [LOOT: TRANSFER TOKEN, COINS x14, TATTERED SCHEDULE] [SIDE QUEST COMPLETE] [+120 XP TO RAE] [XP: 245/250] ```

One more kill away from Level 4. The System was teaching addiction with spreadsheets.

CHAPTER 3: THE CONDUCTOR

Platform End was a cathedral of broken trains. The Conductor waited in a coat of ticket stubs and a face like a punched clock.

``` [BOSS: THE CONDUCTOR] [LEVEL: 6] [HP: 800/800] [MECHANICS: FARE CHECK / ENRAGE AT 50% / SUMMON COMMUTERS] ```
"Tickets," it boomed.
Sasha flung a flare. Ortiz taunted. Rae took the delivery line the boss created—every time it summoned a "commuter" wraith, a micro-quest tagged one as PACKAGE.
``` [MICRO-QUEST: REDIRECT PACKAGE] Deliver marked wraith into third-rail hazard Reward: 40 XP ```

She kited two into the rail. Light and XP exploded.

``` [+40 XP] [LEVEL UP!] [LEVEL 3 → 4] [+2 AGI] [+1 STR] [+1 END] [NEW SKILL OFFER: PARCEL BOMB (BASIC) OR FLEET FOOT (BASIC)] ```
"Parcel Bomb," Rae snapped, because she was tired of only running.
``` [SKILL LEARNED: PARCEL BOMB] Throw a weighted item for 35 base damage + AGI scaling. 20s cooldown. ```

She threw a broken brake shoe into the Conductor's chest at 50% HP. The enrage scream shattered tiles. Ortiz's HP cratered; she Satchel-Linked Stabilize from Sasha—who had somehow gained a minor heal—and slammed it into him.

``` [SATCHEL LINK: FIELD DRESSING (from Sasha)] [ORTIZ HP STABILIZED] ```
The Conductor fell on the third Parcel Bomb and a Guard shield bash.
``` [BOSS DEFEATED] [DUNGEON CLEAR: LINE 7] [+500 XP PARTY] [RAE XP OVERFLOW → LEVEL 4 → 5] [LEVEL 5 REACHED] [CLASS EVOLUTION PATH UNLOCKED] [MAIN QUEST UPDATE: SISTER PROTOCOL — BOND TRAIL AVAILABLE] ```

Rae dropped to one knee as the evolution menu unfurled.

``` [CLASS EVOLUTION OPTIONS] 1) Courier → Rush Mediator (support/economy) 2) Courier → Black Route (offense/solo) 3) Courier → Protocol Runner (balanced, ??? Installer flag) ```
The third option flickered with the same error color as last night's hidden note.
She selected Protocol Runner before she could talk herself out of courage.
``` [CLASS UPDATED: PROTOCOL RUNNER (RESTRICTED+)] [NEW TRAIT: PRIORITY LANE — once/day ignore one zone restriction] [SATCHEL LINK CAPACITY: 1 → 2] ```

Outside, rain felt earned. The bond trail toward Maya lit on her map like a thin gold thread.

``` [QUEST ACTIVE: SISTER PROTOCOL] Follow bond trail. Danger: unknown. Reward: story continuation. ```
Rae adjusted her bag straps. "Line 7's closed," she told the city. "I'm open for business."
CODEX NOTE: HOW THE SYSTEM FEELS
Rae learned quickly that the System did not care about dignity. It cared about inputs and outputs. Move fast, gain XP. Stand still, watch timers die. Help someone, sometimes get a quest. Help the wrong someone, inherit their enemies.
She tested rules the way couriers tested shortcuts:
She wrote none of this down. Paper felt temporary. Memory felt like the only inventory that couldn't be looted—until the System started offering memory slots, and she refused them on principle.
INTERLUDE: MAYA
Maya Voss was sixteen and better at math than Rae had ever been. She kept a chart on her bedroom wall of inhaler doses and peak-flow numbers because the world had always been a system—just a crueler, quieter one called poverty and bad lungs.
Rae had promised to be home by sunrise.
Sunrise was a System phase now.
As Rae pedaled toward the east apartments, she checked every panel for a sibling tag. None appeared. The map fragment marked the block yellow, not red. Yellow meant danger without certainty. Certainty was a luxury.
A child on a balcony waved at her. The child's nameplate read:
``` [ENTITY: CHILD] [CLASS: NONE — PENDING] [PROTECTION DEBUFF: FRAGILE] ```

Rae waved back and did not stop. Stopping was how Couriers failed quests. Failing quests was how people died with her name on the failure log.

She told herself Maya was smart. Smart people survived mornings.

She did not tell herself smart people never needed rescuing.

When she reached their building, the front door had a new lock made of light.

``` [ACCESS REQUIREMENT: PARTY MEMBER OR KEY ITEM] [YOUR KEY: NOT FOUND] ```
Rae kicked the physical door anyway. It opened. The light-lock shattered into sparks and a scolding message.
``` [WARNING: FORCED ENTRY] [BUILDING ALERT RAISED — MINOR] ```

Their apartment was empty. Maya's chart was on the wall. A note on the table in Maya's handwriting:

If the sky goes weird, I'm going to Mrs. Duran in 4B. Don't freak out. Love you. —M

4B was empty too. A quest shimmered where a person should have been.

``` [QUEST SEED: SISTER PROTOCOL] Status: Incomplete information Hint: Follow residual bond trail (available at Level 5) ```
Rae stood in the quiet kitchen and let herself feel the fear for ten full seconds. Then she closed it like a cooler lid and went back into the street, because the System rewarded motion and punished grief that stood still.
