Midnight Protocol — Season 1, Episode 1
Series: LoreBurst LitRPG Flagship
The package was still warm when the world ended.
Not warm like coffee. Warm like a body that hadn't finished deciding whether to die.
Rae Voss signed for it with a cracked stylus on a cracked tablet, shoved the sealed bio-cooler into her messenger bag, and kicked her bike off the curb outside Mercy Cross Hospital at 11:58 PM. Rain had been falling for six hours. The city smelled like wet metal and bleach. Somewhere above the sixth floor, a monitor was still screaming in a rhythm that meant someone's heart hadn't gotten the memo.
"Door-to-door, twenty minutes," the charge nurse had said. "If that cooler opens, I will fire you into the sun."
Rae had almost smiled. Almost. Night-shift medical courier work paid rent and bought Maya's inhalers. Smiling was optional.
She cut through the ambulance bay, tires hissing. The clock on her phone flipped to 11:59.
Then 12:00.
Then 00:00:01.
The rain stopped midair.
Not slowed. Not paused. Stopped—each droplet hanging like a pixel that forgot how gravity worked. Rae braked hard enough to skid. The cooler thumped against her hip. Overhead, every streetlight flickered to the same blue-white, and a translucent panel unfolded in the air three feet in front of her face.
``` [SYSTEM INSTALLATION: 1%] [WORLD LAYER: INITIALIZING] [LOCAL INSTANCE: MERCY CROSS DISTRICT] [WARNING: BIOLOGICAL HOST DETECTED] [SCANNING…] ```
"No," Rae said out loud, because talking to impossible things was how you stayed sane until the ambulance arrived. "Absolutely not. I have a delivery."
``` [SCAN COMPLETE] [NAME: RAE VOSS] [AGE: 26] [STATUS: ALIVE] [CLASS ASSIGNMENT IN PROGRESS…] ```
The hanging rain vibrated. Somewhere down the block, a car alarm started and died in the same breath. A man on the corner dropped to his knees and clawed at the air like he was trying to tear open a curtain only he could see.
Rae's panel pulsed.
``` [CLASS LOCKED: COURIER (RESTRICTED)] [PRIMARY ATTRIBUTE PATH: AGILITY / ENDURANCE] [UNIQUE TRAIT: SATCHEL LINK — ACTIVE] [NOTE: CLASS RARITY — UNCOMMON / LOW PRESTIGE] ```
"Restricted how?" she asked.
A second panel slid under the first like a rude notification.
``` [QUEST RECEIVED: FIRST BLOOD DELIVERY] Objective: Deliver BIO-COOLER #MC-7741 to 1402 Kestrel Avenue within 00:19:59 Failure: Package spoils / Recipient dies / Host dies Reward: 250 XP + Skill Seed (Random) Accept: AUTOMATIC (Class Compulsion: Courier) ```
The timer started without her permission.
``` [00:19:58] [00:19:57] ```
Rae swore, hard and creative, and stood on the pedals.
CHAPTER 1: THE RULES WRITE THEMSELVES
The city was still the city until it wasn't.
Three blocks from Mercy Cross, the asphalt developed a faint grid of blue lines only visible when she wasn't looking straight at them. A convenience store sign glitched from OPEN to [SAFE ZONE: F-RANK] and back. A stray dog ran past with a floating tag:
``` [ENTITY: STRAY CANINE] [LEVEL: 1] [HOSTILITY: LOW] [LOOT TABLE: NONE] ```
Rae did not have time for dogs.
She checked her own status the way the System seemed to want—by thinking status the way you thought about a password you never typed.
``` [STATUS — RAE VOSS] Level: 1 Class: Courier (Restricted) HP: 100/100 STA: 88/100 XP: 0/100 STR: 8 AGI: 14 END: 12 INT: 11 WIL: 13 LCK: 7
SKILLS: - Sprint (Basic) — 8s burst, 30s cooldown - Route Sense (Class) — highlights shortest legal path - Satchel Link (Unique) — store 1 temporary Skill from a willing donor (3 min)
INVENTORY: - Bio-Cooler #MC-7741 (Quest Item — Fragile) - Phone (Nonfunctional) - Keys - $43.12 cash - Inhaler (Maya) — DO NOT USE
ACTIVE QUEST: First Blood Delivery — 00:17:41 remaining ```
Her phone was a brick. No signal. No maps. Only the System's blue path ribbon unspooling down the street like a sarcastic GPS.
She took it.
Kestrel Avenue was twelve minutes on a good night. The timer said she had seventeen. The System was either generous or setting her up.
At the intersection of 9th and Harbor, a bus had folded in half around a lamppost. Passengers spilled out, screaming. One of them—a man in a suit—sprouted a glowing red outline.
``` [ENTITY: COMMUTER] [CONDITION: BERSERK] [CAUSE: FAILED CLASS INTEGRATION] [HOSTILITY: HIGH] ```
He charged.
Rae's body moved before her brain finished the math. Sprint lit up in the corner of her vision. She kicked hard. The world blurred. The berserk commuter hit the space where her bike had been and ate asphalt.
``` [SKILL USED: SPRINT] [STA -12] [COOLDOWN: 00:00:30] ```
"Okay," she panted. "Okay. That's real."
The cooler bumped her ribs. The timer kept bleeding seconds. She didn't stop to help. She hated herself for it. She also wanted Maya to still have a sister in the morning.
CHAPTER 2: MERCY HAS A DANGER RATING
Kestrel Avenue was a row of aging walk-ups and a laundromat that never closed. Tonight the laundromat's windows showed a different interior—stone walls, torchlight, and a floating skull icon.
``` [DUNGEON SEED DETECTED: LAUNDROMAT B2] [RANK: E] [STATUS: FORMING — DO NOT ENTER] ```
"Not tonight," Rae told it.
1402 was a third-floor walkup. She locked the bike with hands that shook, climbed stairs two at a time, and pounded on the door.
"Medical delivery! Mercy Cross!"
The door opened on a woman in her forties with blood on her sleeve and eyes too wide. Behind her, a teenage boy lay on a couch, gray-lipped, IV already taped in by amateur hands.
``` [QUEST TARGET IDENTIFIED: JAVIER ORTEGA] [CONDITION: CRITICAL — ORGAN FAILURE] [TIME TO DEATH: 00:06:12] ```
Rae shoved the cooler into the woman's arms. "Sign—no, don't sign, just open it. The code is on the seal. Do it."
The woman fumbled. Rae cracked the seal herself, pulled the bag of dark red miracle, and watched the woman—nurse? sister? stranger?—start the procedure with desperate competence.
``` [DELIVERY CONDITIONS: MET] [QUEST COMPLETE: FIRST BLOOD DELIVERY] [REWARD: +250 XP] [LEVEL UP!] [LEVEL 1 → 2] [HP FULLY RESTORED] [STA FULLY RESTORED] [+2 AGI] [+1 END] [+1 WIL] [SKILL SEED ACQUIRED: STABILIZE (BASIC)] ```
Rae staggered as warmth punched through her limbs. The blue panels stacked like applause she hadn't earned.
``` [SKILL LEARNED: STABILIZE (BASIC)] Effect: Once per 10 minutes, halt bleeding/degeneration on a living target for 30 seconds. Cost: 20 STA ```
The boy's color improved by a shade that meant maybe. The woman sobbed. Outside, something howled that was not a dog.
``` [NEW QUEST AVAILABLE: SURVIVE THE FIRST NIGHT] Objective: Remain alive until 06:00:00 local System time Optional: Escort 1 civilian to a Safe Zone Reward: 400 XP + Zone Map Fragment Accept? [Y/N] ```
Rae thought yes because the alternative was standing still.
``` [QUEST ACCEPTED] [SAFE ZONE NEAREST: MERCY CROSS HOSPITAL — F-RANK (CONTESTED)] [WARNING: HOSPITAL DUNGEON CONVERSION IN PROGRESS — 34%] ```
"Contested," she repeated. "Of course it is."
CHAPTER 3: THE HOSPITAL LEARNS NEW WORDS
Going back to Mercy Cross was the worst good idea she had.
The ambulance bay had become a checkpoint. Blue barriers shimmered across the driveway. Staff in scrubs fought things that had been patients twenty minutes ago—twisted joints, wrong smiles, floating red names.
``` [ENTITY: FAILED INTEGRATION — FORMER PATIENT] [LEVEL: 2] [HOSTILITY: HIGH] [WEAK POINT: CERVICAL / BACK] ```
Dr. Lin Cho stood on a gurney like a general on a hill, barking triage orders with a glowing green staff icon over one shoulder.
``` [ENTITY: DR. LIN CHO] [CLASS: MEDIC (STANDARD)] [LEVEL: 3] [AFFILIATION: MERCY CROSS SURVIVORS] ```
"Voss!" Lin shouted. "You're alive. Good. Don't die. I need runners."
"I need my sister," Rae said. "Is the residential block—"
"Phones are dead. Radios are dead. The System says the east apartments are a yellow zone." Lin tossed her a keycard that now had a quest tag. "Basement pharmacy. Bring antibiotics and insulin. Anyone who can walk is becoming something else if their Class fails. Move!"
``` [PARTY INVITE: MERCY CROSS SURVIVORS] [ACCEPT?] ```
Rae accepted. A thin green line connected her silhouette to Lin and two security guards in the interface.
``` [PARTY BUFF: SHARED MINIMAP (50m)] [PARTY BUFF: +5% XP] ```
The basement stairs smelled like floor wax and fear. Route Sense painted a path through a door marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL. Behind it, shelves of medicine had reorganized themselves into chests.
``` [CONTAINER: PHARMACY STOCK] [INTERACT TO LOOT] ```
She looted like a criminal and a professional at the same time—insulin, broad-spectrum antibiotics, epinephrine. The System converted them into inventory tiles with weights and stack counts.
``` [INVENTORY UPDATE] - Insulin (x12) - Antibiotics (x20) - EpiPen (x4) - Bio-Cooler seal remnant (junk) [WEIGHT: 6.4 / 20] ```
Something scraped metal behind the autoclave.
``` [ENTITY: CORRIDOR CRAWLER] [LEVEL: 3] [HOSTILITY: EXTREME] ```
It had too many elbows. Rae's hands found a fire extinguisher because the System had not given her a sword and she was not waiting for one.
The crawler lunged. She sidestepped—AGI 16 now, body singing—and smashed the extinguisher into the weak point the panel highlighted in red. Once. Twice. The thing shrieked in a human voice and dissolved into light.
``` [ENEMY DEFEATED] [+75 XP] [LOOT: BANDAGE (x2), SHARP BONE FRAGMENT (crafting scrap)] [XP: 75/150 TO LEVEL 3] ```
Rae stood in the quiet, breathing hard, and laughed once without humor.
"I'm looting my workplace."
``` [ACHIEVEMENT: FIRST KILL] [TITLE UNLOCKED: BLOODY HANDS (COSMETIC)] ```
"Shut up," she told the System.
CHAPTER 4: SATCHEL LINK
On the ER floor, a security guard named Ortiz was dying the slow way—gut wound, red HP bar dropping in ticks.
``` [ENTITY: ORTIZ, M.] [HP: 22/110] [BLEEDING: SEVERE] ```
"I have Stabilize," Rae said. "Hold still."
She used it. Green light stitched into his abdomen for thirty seconds of borrowed time.
``` [STABILIZE USED] [STA 80/100] [TARGET BLEEDING HALTED: 00:00:30] ```
Ortiz grabbed her wrist. "Take it," he rasped. "My skill. System says I can gift—"
``` [SATCHEL LINK REQUEST] Donor: Ortiz, M. Skill: Guard Stance (Basic) — reduce incoming damage 20% for 8s Duration if accepted: 3 minutes Accept? [Y/N] ```
Rae accepted. Cold fire poured up her arm into the bag at her hip. A new icon locked into her skill bar with a timer.
``` [SATCHEL LINK ACTIVE: GUARD STANCE] [00:02:59] ```
"I'll bring it back," she said, which was a stupid promise, but Couriers didn't drop cargo.
She used Guard Stance when the next crawler came through the ambulance doors. Damage numbers floated. Her HP dipped from 100 to 91 instead of something worse.
``` [DAMAGE TAKEN: 9 (reduced)] [HP: 91/100] ```
When the three minutes expired, the skill ripped free and returned to Ortiz like a rubber band of light. He gasped. Rae's bar emptied of the borrowed power.
``` [SATCHEL LINK ENDED] [SKILL RETURNED TO OWNER] ```
Lin stared at her. "Your class does that?"
"Apparently Couriers are the economy," Rae said. "Great. I always wanted to be infrastructure."
CHAPTER 5: 06:00
Dawn did not look like dawn. It looked like the System dimming the neon and raising a white slider labeled DAY PHASE.
``` [QUEST COMPLETE: SURVIVE THE FIRST NIGHT] [+400 XP] [LEVEL UP!] [LEVEL 2 → 3] [HP/STA RESTORED] [+2 AGI] [+1 END] [+1 INT] [ZONE MAP FRAGMENT ACQUIRED] ```
Rae opened the map fragment. Mercy Cross District sketched itself in blue: Safe Zones, yellow hazards, a red blotch over the subway labeled LINE 7 — DUNGEON (E-RANK) — ACTIVE.
``` [STATUS — RAE VOSS] Level: 3 Class: Courier (Restricted) HP: 100/100 STA: 100/100 XP: 175/250 STR: 8 AGI: 18 END: 14 INT: 12 WIL: 14 LCK: 7 SKILLS: Sprint, Route Sense, Stabilize, Satchel Link ```
She sat on the curb outside the bay, helmet in her hands, rain finally falling like rain again. Somewhere east, Maya was either safe or not. The System would not say.
A new panel unfurled, polite as a knife.
``` [MAIN QUEST UPDATED: LEARN THE RULES] Objective 1: Reach Level 5 Objective 2: Clear or survive Line 7 Dungeon once Objective 3: Locate Maya Voss Reward: Class Evolution Path Unlocked ```
Rae stood, checked the straps on her bag, and looked at the city like a route she refused to lose.
"Fine," she said. "I'll deliver. But I'm rewriting the address."
Above the hospital, for just a second, an error message flickered where only she could see it:
``` [INSTALLER NOTE // NOT FOR HOST DISPLAY] [COURIER THREAD PRIORITY: ELEVATED] [DO NOT LOSE THIS ONE] ```
Then it was gone, and the day began, and the game—because that was what it was, whether she liked the word or not—kept score.
END OF EPISODE 1
Next: Episode 2 — "Line 7" Rae enters her first dungeon. Party mechanics break. The subway wants a fare paid in blood.
CODEX NOTE: HOW THE SYSTEM FEELS
Rae learned quickly that the System did not care about dignity. It cared about inputs and outputs. Move fast, gain XP. Stand still, watch timers die. Help someone, sometimes get a quest. Help the wrong someone, inherit their enemies.
She tested rules the way couriers tested shortcuts:

She wrote none of this down. Paper felt temporary. Memory felt like the only inventory that couldn't be looted—until the System started offering memory slots, and she refused them on principle.
INTERLUDE: MAYA
Maya Voss was sixteen and better at math than Rae had ever been. She kept a chart on her bedroom wall of inhaler doses and peak-flow numbers because the world had always been a system—just a crueler, quieter one called poverty and bad lungs.
Rae had promised to be home by sunrise.
Sunrise was a System phase now.
As Rae pedaled toward the east apartments, she checked every panel for a sibling tag. None appeared. The map fragment marked the block yellow, not red. Yellow meant danger without certainty. Certainty was a luxury.
A child on a balcony waved at her. The child's nameplate read:
``` [ENTITY: CHILD] [CLASS: NONE — PENDING] [PROTECTION DEBUFF: FRAGILE] ```
Rae waved back and did not stop. Stopping was how Couriers failed quests. Failing quests was how people died with her name on the failure log.
She told herself Maya was smart. Smart people survived mornings.
She did not tell herself smart people never needed rescuing.
When she reached their building, the front door had a new lock made of light.
``` [ACCESS REQUIREMENT: PARTY MEMBER OR KEY ITEM] [YOUR KEY: NOT FOUND] ```
Rae kicked the physical door anyway. It opened. The light-lock shattered into sparks and a scolding message.
``` [WARNING: FORCED ENTRY] [BUILDING ALERT RAISED — MINOR] ```
Their apartment was empty. Maya's chart was on the wall. A note on the table in Maya's handwriting:
If the sky goes weird, I'm going to Mrs. Duran in 4B. Don't freak out. Love you. —M
4B was empty too. A quest shimmered where a person should have been.
``` [QUEST SEED: SISTER PROTOCOL] Status: Incomplete information Hint: Follow residual bond trail (available at Level 5) ```
Rae stood in the quiet kitchen and let herself feel the fear for ten full seconds. Then she closed it like a cooler lid and went back into the street, because the System rewarded motion and punished grief that stood still.
